Conclusion
This resource has been designed to support those who help people with learning disabilities who have been bereaved. However, professionals may decide to use parts of this booklet (particularly the more practical approaches) to inform and support family and friends.

The concepts of grief have been introduced, specifically in relation to people with learning disabilities. Issues surrounding support, and challenges to offering effective support, are recognised and strategies described to overcome such barriers. Practical approaches are presented and examples of good practice given.

This booklet has been written in conjunction with two other leaflets ("When someone you know has died: a guide for bereaved individuals" and "When someone you know has died: a guide for carers") to raise the profile of this sensitive topic within North Staffordshire, and to ensure a consistency of meaningful support to this client group. Whilst this booklet will never replace multi-disciplinary education and training, it is hoped that the ethos behind it will serve to complement existing learning opportunities whilst also encouraging the development of new initiatives within North Staffordshire.
